Yard Act’s band logo became a familiar sight on t-shirts up and down the country when they commandeered the indie music scene in 2022 with their Mercury-nominated debut album The Overload: populated by greedy estate agents, landlords, and lager-swillers, and communicated via the Mark E Smith-like intonations of frontman James Smith. The Leeds group widened their sonic scope on 2024’s Where’s My Utopia, co-produced with Remi Kabaka Jr of Gorillaz — and on which they allowed elements of disco, hiphop, Afrobeat, and Shakespeare to slip within their mostly unserious, pop-respecting post-punk remit.
