The Joy

Mbube — the Zulu tradition of singing a cappella — translates to “lion”: and you can see why when you hear The Joy, a South African group who harness their raw vocal power to euphoric effect. Schoolboy choir singers turned international stars, their appeal is so widespread they’ve earned quite the miscellaneous fanbase: Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Doja Cat, Jools Holland. They released their self-titled debut album last year, recorded live with no instruments or overdubs — the result will leave you in no doubt as to why they’re called The Joy.
