Writing songs on a tiny bouzouki, shaped by travels in Arizona, Amsterdam, Greece, and piecing together an album in her grandmother’s south London shed, Naima Bock has often attracted the adjective “nomadic”, and no less so with her latest album, Below, A Massive Dark Land — a title that borrows writer Olga Tokarczuk’s description of the view from an aeroplane window. The Greek-Brazilian, Glastonbury-born artist, formerly of Goat Girl, first went it alone with 2022 album Giant Palm. Her follow-up is strong and purposeful, full of rich ambitious arrangements and a choir, horn, and string section — and promises to be an unmissable communal live experience.
