“As an artist, your antennae are just so sensitive,” said Gwenno in a recent interview. She would know: as well as speaking Welsh, she joins the other 562-ish people who speak fluent Cornish. Across her solo output, including 2022’s Tresor and 2018’s Le Kov, she’s embodied a Celtic spirit and conversational vitality as she delves into themes of language, nature, and motherhood. A new album is rumoured to arrive this summer: written in St Ives, it’s “a tribute to surviving youth”, that reflects on all the cities she’s lived in and people she’s met, from working as a dancer in Las Vegas, to life in indie-pop outfit the Pipettes in Brighton, to London, Cardiff, and Cornwall: “gliding, Peter Lanyon style, over the last 25 years of my life.”
