A mercurial early pioneer of disco at its slinkiest, last year Asha Puthli played her first UK shows in fifty years. The Indian-American artist moved from Mumbai to New York in the 1960s (after becoming an air hostess in order to obtain an Indian passport). Her biography runs like a Who’s Who of 1970s New York: the Warhol Factory scene and David Mancuso’s Loft crowd, Studio 54, Grace Jones, Bianca Jagger, Ornette Coleman, Woodstock hippy camps. Her cult hit Space Talk and 1976 album The Devil is Loose sent disco far off into the cosmos, where it ricocheted between galactic funk, feathery vocals, and shimmery seduction.
