Heartbeats, hums, garden hubbub, and lately an obscure 1980s Japanese synthesiser: Hiro Ama is a magpie for sound, collecting them from unusual places and instruments and transforming them into moments of quiet musical beauty. On his debut solo album, the musician and Teleman drummer employed the traditional koto, flutes, and drums of the Wakaru synthesiser, the name of which translates to “music for peace and harmony” and informs both the title and sound of the record. With sparse, emotive vocals from Keeley Forsyth, and faint instances of jazz and Japanese industrial, Music For Peace And Harmony shows that Hiro Ama is an artist who understands better than most Debussy’s edict that “music is the space between the notes.”
