In 2023, several lithium batteries combusted in an e-bike shop in Manhattan. Asleep upstairs was folk musician Allegra Krieger. She narrowly escaped tragedy. The experience consolidated an already intimate relationship with the sense of being alive: the album she was working on at the time was, after all, called I Keep My Feet On The Fragile Plane. Creaking piano, scratchy guitar, lust, lapsed Catholicism, and the writings of Anne Carson and Clarice Lispector all fall under her remit. Her recent second album Art Of The Unseen Infinity Machine, meanwhile, is ever more firmly alive, with songs that “pick at the fragile membrane between life and death”.
