Stewart began writing and performing as a stand-up on the comedy club circuit at the age of 20 and in 1990 won the Hackney Empire New Act of The Year.Stand-up tours include Snowflake/Tornado, Content Provider, Stand-Up Comedian, 90’s Comedian and 41st Best Stand-Up Ever. Following their popularity, the BBC2 commissioned Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle (which won a BAFTA and two British Comedy Awards). He has contributed to various BBC Radio comedy shows, including Fist of Fun and On the Hour.Stewart is the author of stand-up studies including How I Escaped My Certain Fate, If You Prefer A Milder Comedian Please Ask For One and Content Provider and the theatre pieces Pea Green Boat, What Would Judas Do?, Johnson and Boswell, Late But Live and Interiors. He has directed Arctic Boosh (the Mighty Boosh's breakthrough Edinburgh show), Attention Scum and a revival of Eric Bogosian's Talk Radio.
