Scale the summits of your imagination: GM16 unveils new performing arts area ‘Back of Beyond’Posted Mon 20 Jun. 2016

A new place of enchantment is beginning to stir within the magic surrounds of Green Man 2016. Hidden by the woods behind the lively hubbub of our Walled Garden and nestled within the beautiful Fortune Falls, this freshly curated performing arts area Back of Beyond will set the scene for spectacular circus and dance, mischievous encounters and make believe moments with some of Wales’ most talented performers. Mae rhywbeth yn dechrau ystwyrian ar safle newydd lledrithiol yng ngŵyl ryfeddol y Dyn Gwyrdd 2016. Bydd ardal gelfyddydol newydd sbon Ym Mhen Draw’r Byd - sy’n swatio yn y coed y tu ôl i fwstwr bywiog ein Gardd Furiog o fewn llecyn hyfryd y Rhaeadr Ryfeddol - yn gefndir i berfformiadau syrcas a dawns mawreddog, i gyfarfyddiadau direidus ac eiliadau o ddychymyg pur yng nghwmni rhai o berfformwyr mwyaf talentog Cymru.

This year the area will transform into a Basecamp, inspired by Crickhowell’s most famous son: Welsh explorer Sir George Everest who gave his name to the world’s highest peak. Co-curated by our friends at Citrus Arts along with fellow dream weavers from Circomedia, Flossy & Boo, Kitsch n Sync Collective and Tin Shed Theatre, Basecamp at Back of Beyond will be an outpost of artistic expression for Green Man goers to take refuge in. Discover lost adventurers, crazy mountainous challenges, snow-capped chaos and intriguingly strange characters, all set amongst the ever-inspiring backdrop of the natural world.

At dusk each evening, Citrus Arts & Circomedia will present ‘Precipice’ - an intimate fiery spectacle of circus theatre that follows a hardy band of mountain explorers struggling to overcome the contortions of their altitude-addled minds as they attempt to make history by scaling the world’s mightiest mountain. Can you think of a better venue for this performance than Brecon’s own adventure-filled Black Mountains? Nope, we can’t either!

We’re utterly chuffed to announce that National Dance Company Wales will be premiering their first ever festival piece here at Green Man. ‘Animatorium’ sees the troupe of award-winning dancers brought to life, animated and controlled by a charming yet sinister Master character. This will be a quirky and comic performance, filled with theatricality and humour while also harbouring some delightfully dark undertones. With future outdoor performances in the works, don’t miss the chance to see NDCWales debut this important part of their new festival repertoire. And if you’re really lucky, you might spot some of their dancers in disguise getting involved in some Bowie-themed shenanigans around site!

And that’s not all! Other pop-up arts experiences around site will include surreal roving theatre from Wet Picnic, the puppeteers from Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, inclusive theatre from Taking Flight Theatre, Clik Clik Collective’s Cabinet of Strange Reflections, comedy hoop routines from Sparkles Hoop Troupe, theatrical glitter makeovers and ceilidh dancing with Salon Mirela, intimate folk gigs with Folk in a Box, Burnt Toast’s mobile time-travelling post-office, crazy singalongs with Mariachi El Pinche Gringo and Shakespeare scenes from Gwent Young People’s Theatre.

We are very grateful to Arts Council Wales for their support of Welsh performing arts at the Festival in 2016

Mae rhywbeth yn dechrau ystwyrian ar safle newydd lledrithiol yng ngŵyl ryfeddol y Dyn Gwyrdd 2016. Bydd ardal gelfyddydol newydd sbon Ym Mhen Draw’r Byd - sy’n swatio yn y coed y tu ôl i fwstwr bywiog ein Gardd Furiog o fewn llecyn hyfryd y Rhaeadr Ryfeddol - yn gefndir i berfformiadau syrcas a dawns mawreddog, i gyfarfyddiadau direidus ac eiliadau o ddychymyg pur yng nghwmni rhai o berfformwyr mwyaf talentog Cymru.

Eleni bydd y safle’n cael ei drawsffurfio’n Wersyll Cychwyn, a ysbrydolwyd gan un o feibion enwocaf Crucywel: yr archwiliwr Syr George Everest, a roddodd ei enw i fynydd ucha’r byd. Ein cyfeillion o Citrus Arts ynghyd â’u cyd-grewyr syniadau yn Circomedia, Flossy & Boo, Kitsch n Sync Collective a Tin Shed Theatre, fydd yn cyd-ofalu am y Gwersyll Cychwyn ym Mhen Draw’r Byd a bydd yn safle o fynegiant artistig a fydd yn cynnig lloches i fynychwyr yr Ŵyl. Bydd cyfle i ddysgu am anturiaethwyr a gollwyd, am heriau mynyddig lloerig, anhrefn ar y llethrau eiraog a chymeriadau rhyfedd llawn dirgelwch, a bydd byd natur yn gefndir ysbrydoledig i’r holl weithgareddau.

Bob nos wrth iddi dywyllu bydd Citrus Arts & Circomedia yn cyflwyno ‘Precipice’ – arddangosfa danllyd o theatr syrcas sy’n dilyn grŵp eofn o archwilwyr mynyddig sy’n ymdrechu i ymdopi â’r uchder sy’n llyffetheirio’u meddyliau wrth iddynt greu hanes wrth ddringo mynydd ucha’r byd. Allwch chi feddwl am well canolfan i gynnal y perfformiad hwn nag yng nghysgod Mynyddoedd Duon Aberhonddu? Na, ninnau chwaith!

Rydym yn hynod o falch o gael cyhoeddi y bydd Cwmni Dawns Cenedlaethol Cymru yn cynnal eu perfformiad cyntaf erioed mewn ‘gŵyl’ yma yn y Dyn Gwyrdd. Yn ‘Animatorium’ gwelwn y cwmni hwn o ddawnswyr gwobrwyedig yn dod yn fyw, yn cael eu hanimeiddio a’u rheoli gan gymeriad dengar ond sinistr y Meistr. Bydd hwn yn berfformiad od a chomig, a fydd yn llawn nodweddion theatrig a hiwmor ond hefyd bydd awgrym o neges dywyll ryfeddol dan yr wyneb. Gan fod perfformiadau awyr agored eraill ar y gweill, dyma gyfle gwerthfawr i weld NDCWales yn dechrau ar y rhan bwysig hon o’u repertoire ar gyfer gwyliau. Ac os byddwch yn wirioneddol lwcus, efallai y gwelwch rai o’u dawnswyr mewn gwisg gwbl wahanol yn cymryd rhan mewn rhai o’r giamocs yn null Bowie ar y safle!

Ac nid dyna’r cwbl o bell ffordd! Ymhlith y profiadau celfyddydol pop-up ar y safle bydd theatr swreal deithiol Wet Picnic, pypedwyr Coleg Cerdd a Drama Brenhinol Caerdydd, theatr gynhwysol Taking Flight Theatre, Cabinet of Strange Reflections Clik Clik Collective, rwtinau cylchau hwla comedi Sparkles Hoop Troupe, colur a glitter theatrig a dawnsio ceilidh gyda Salon Mirela, gigs gwerin cartrefol yng nghwmni Folk in a Box, swyddfa bost sy’n teithio-drwy-amser Burnt Toast, sesiynau cyd-ganu lloerig yng nghwmni Mariachi El Pinche Gringo a golygfeydd o Shakespeare gan Theatr Pobl Ifanc Gwent.
