Under his Bright Eyes guise, Conor Oberst was the most precocious of talents; a teenage songwriter with a gift for lyricism that belied his tender age. Amassing a huge cult following before most of us had even left school, his output has slowed considerably over the past decade, but with that has come a new found knack for story-telling; something much more thoughtful and classic, but no-less engaging. Last year’s Ruminations album was up there with the best of his work; a stripped-back set of ballads that Oberst released raw and unadorned. This year sees its follow-up, a companion piece that offers a much fuller sound, with contributions from My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Gillian Welch, M. Ward, and more, and a whole new chapter in Oberst’s most illustrious of stories.
